“Objective judgment, now at this very moment. Unselfish action, now at this very moment. Willing acceptance - now at this very moment - of all external events. That's all you need.”
Marcus Aurelius | 121 - 180 | Roman emperor
With all that’s going on in the world, I find myself (as I’m sure you have) giving a lot of thought to my should’ves ... those things I should've done when things were better but didn’t.
- Those relationships I should've initiated and better nurtured.
- The projects I should've given more attention to.
- That money I should've better saved and spent.
- Those things I should’ve invested time to learn.
For me, reflecting on these things can be unpleasant. But, when I remove the emotion … following my own advice from the Rise side of Rise & Reach … to learn what I can from my missed should’ves and ask ’Now what? What will I do now with what I’ve learned? How will I move forward regardless of the past?’ When I do that, I can find value in the unpleasantness.
Equally important, though, is how I believe those missed should’ves can serve us when we get to the other side of all this … if we let them. They can be our reminders to continually Reach even when things are good … to push for better by asking ‘What’s next?’ rather than rest in complacency.
And if we do that more often, I’m confident we’ll find ourselves in more good places than bad.
